DRAWN OVER MANDREL TUBING

Our drawn over mandrel (DOM) tubing is available in one of the most extensive size ranges in the world. It is supplied in as-drawn condition unless otherwise specified. Our lengthy experience in the manufacture of DOM tubing has allowed us to reduce the guaranteed machining, honing and centerless grinding allowances for this product as much as 50 percent from normal industry standards, and to guarantee outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID) tolerances that are tighter than commercial standards.

DOM tubing is the preferred choice for a wide range of static and dynamic applications such as telescopic cylinders, axles, high-speed shafts, shock absorbers, gas springs, printing, textile and paper mill rolls, and a variety of machined components.

Tubular Products DOM tubing can be purchased in less than mill production quantities from leading steel service centers throughout North America and abroad.

Manufacturing process

Our DOM tubing starts as high quality, electric resistance welded tubing that has been flash removed, 100 percent inspected for weld integrity and cut to length. The tubing is normalized in a continuous, controlled-atmosphere annealing furnace then cold drawn to creates a uniform, precision product.

During the cold drawing process, tubing is formed in a controlled fashion over a mandrel and through a die to reduce the diameter and wall thickness. This transformation improves the dimensional tolerance, surface finish and homogeneity while increasing tensile strength, hardness and machinability.

Features

  • Tighter tolerances than the ASTM specification
  • High concentricity; uniform wall thickness
  • Enhanced OD and ID surface quality
  • Thermal treatment available - stress relieved or normalized

Benefits

  • High strength-to weight ratio
  • High diameter to thickness ratio
  • Precise dimensional tolerance reduces machining time, scrap loss and expense
  • Improved tool life
  • Reduced surface preparation
  • Entire tube has homogeneous microstructure
